State Machines vs Entity Components: Structuring Real-Time Godot 4 Projects

As game systems grow in complexity, sprawling monolithic player controllers become unmaintainable and prone to state bugs. In Godot 4, combining hierarchical state machines (HSM) with node-based composition provides an elegant, high-performance architecture that keeps code decoupled and debuggable.
Implementation Highlights
- Decoupled State Nodes: Each player state (Idle, Patrol, Combat, Recovery) is an isolated Node handling its own input, physics process, and transition conditions.
- Strict GDScript Typing: Eliminating dynamic lookups in hot physics process loops preserves locked 60 FPS execution on mid-tier mobile hardware.
- Component Signals: Use event buses and typed signals rather than direct node path dependencies to manage damage, audio triggers, and VFX feedback.
